Wars Within
By Daniel Grossman, Pastoral Counselor & Board-Certified Master Life Coach
There is a time for everything, a time to love and a time to hate. A time for peace and a time for war. When we think of the word “war,” we often think about it on a worldwide scale or nation against nation, however there are raging wars within us all every single day. In John Piper’s now infamous sermon entitled “Make War,” he passionately and emphatically declares; “I hear so many Christians, murmuring about their imperfections, and their failures, and their addiction, and their shortcomings. And I see so little war! Murmur, murmur, murmur. Why am I this way, Make War!”
Maybe for you the war within is masked so well that no one really knows that you struggle with anxiety, fear, depression, anger or addiction; yet day after day the battle is blaring in your mind and soul. Have you said to yourself “enough is enough” and I am sick and tired of being sick and tired about this issue?! Then it’s time to take action and it’s time to declare war.
The great news is you don’t have to go into this war alone, because we have a God fighting with us and for us. The Bible describes God in many ways, as a loving father and as a constant companion, but it also describes Him as a warrior in Exodus 15:3, “the LORD is a warrior; the LORD is His Name”
These wars within cannot be fought with normal weaponry; as 2 Corinthians 10:4 reminds us “the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.” We need God’s divine power and direction to win our wars. Psalm 144:1 tells us God trains our hands for war and gives our fingers skill for battle. Sometimes we don’t have the skills to overcome the wars within and we need some support.
So here is some more good news: God can give you other “soldiers,” such as a Christian counselor, to join the war with you and together you can see victory over the issues that have been attacking you for years. The Bible tells us in Ecclesiastes 4:12 “though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves and a cord of three strands is not easily broken.”
So perhaps it’s time to join arms with God and a Christian counselor, make a declaration of war and begin to address the issues and gain the skills and support to have a continuously victorious life. Reach out today and schedule an appointment with one of our counselors and let us know you’re ready to go to war!
